However, the reordering of a simile is a very arbitrary change, and Herod even seems mentally unstable at this point in his monologue. It is clear that the symbolic language in Herods mind that flows through this monologue has an intense effect on his mental health. Herod is, essentially, in bondage to not only his desire to see Salome da nce, but also to symbolic language, the kind that Iokanaan had wielded to such great effect. He says explicitly, on page 52, I am the slave of my word, and my word is the word of a king. At first glance, the first part of this statement is a metaphor; however, it is clear in the context of Herods monologue, that the entire statement is literal: Herod is a slave to his words, and to his imagination. Herod is, ultimately, trapped by symbolism. He is bounded by Salomes dance, itself a symbolic gesture, one that, according to Barthes, establish[es] the woman right from the start as an object in disguise [Emphasis his] (84). The King is, also, bounded by his own language, his propensity to invent ominous things. He is stressful and neurotic, and his desire to see Salome merely dance has come into the open in his monologue. The strange and idiosyncratic qualities of Herods monologue his desperate repetition, his unstable feelings, his apprehensive symbolism, and his nervous and ch ildlike tone all serve to reinforce the notion that he cannot escape his desire, and that he is stuck between his fetish and his fear. If we could choose one thing to change the world, one way we thought we could fix all the world s problems, what would it be? This is the thought of the movie Pay it Forward. This movie tackles what a small child s (Trevor) idea of changing the world could be from his point of view. The movie also tackles themes of alcoholism, bullying, and insecurity. Pay it Forward starts in a very interesting way; a news reporter’s car is wrecked, and a man gives him a brand new car, saying simply call it a favor between two strangers and pay it forward. This idea then proceeds throughout the story as the reporter traces the origins back to Trevor(Haley Osment) and the origin of the pay it forward mindset. It is an assignment given by his teacher, Mr. Eugene (Kevin Spacey) for each child in the room to find a way to change the world. Throughout the movie, this theme is elaborated on, and in many cases, it seems to backfire, only to work out for the better of the film. The acting in this film is phenomenal. Kevin Spacey gives an inspiring performance, while Haley Osment provides the innocent kid that is neglected but has a great idea to perfection. Arlene (Helen Hunt) could have done a better job of seeming more into the role at sometimes she seemed detached to me and that would have made it all around amazing acting wise.
